boot
To boot something is to start it up. People say they boot their phone or computer when they turn it on from a powered-off state.
What a model may hear
- bootstrap loader operating systems
- assume the user wants to talk about the initial program that starts the OS, or the boot sector of a disk
- bootstrapping statistics and machine learning
- assume the user means resampling with replacement to estimate uncertainty, or self-starting algorithms
- Docker container boot containerization
- assume the user means container startup sequence or entrypoint configuration
- network boot networking and PXE
- assume the user means booting over the network rather than local storage
- Spring Boot Java frameworks
- assume the user means the specific framework for standalone Spring applications
Where people and models part ways
“My computer won't boot”
Meant: My computer won't turn on
May be taken as: The model may ask about boot loader configuration or BIOS settings instead of basic power or hardware issues
Say instead: “My computer won't turn on or start up”
“I need to boot the model”
Meant: I need to start or initialize something
May be taken as: The model may think the user wants to bootstrap a statistical model or configure a startup routine
Say instead: “I need to start or initialize the program”
“Give it the boot”
Meant: Dismiss or fire someone
May be taken as: The model may interpret this literally as a computer startup command
Say instead: “Dismiss that person or end that relationship”
“Boot up the meeting”
Meant: Start the meeting
May be taken as: The model may suggest technical startup sequences rather than simply scheduling or beginning
Say instead: “Start or begin the meeting”
Tips
- Say 'start up' or 'turn on' if you mean a device, not a computer
- Say 'restart' if you mean reboot, since 'boot' alone may confuse
- Say 'Spring Boot' fully if you mean the Java framework
- Say 'bootstrap' fully if you mean the statistical method
- Say 'kick out' or 'remove' if you mean dismissal, not 'give the boot'
Often confused with
- reboot
- specifically means restart, not first start
- bootstrap
- statistical resampling or self-starting, not just starting
- root
- administrator access, not startup
- bot
- automated program, not startup process
- boot sector
- specific disk region, not general startup
- init
- Unix system initialization, broader than boot
